Women in Digital Trade
Free digital finance training for women running small businesses: mobile payments, online selling and record-keeping, delivered inside the markets where they trade.
Women run most of Nigeria's market stalls and hold a small fraction of its mobile-money accounts. Short, practical sessions at the stall can change that.
The programme works with market women's associations in Kano and Lagos. Sessions are held at the stall or in the association's meeting room, in Hausa, Yoruba or English, and last no more than ninety minutes. The curriculum is narrow on purpose: taking payments by phone, keeping simple records, listing goods on the platforms customers already use, and staying safe from fraud.
Peer trainers from the market, sessions that fit around trading hours, and a follow-up visit a month later.
We recruit and pay trainers from within each market, so that lessons are trusted and continue after we leave. Each participant receives a printed guide in her own language and a follow-up visit four weeks after the last session. We work with a mobile-money partner to remove account-opening barriers, and we record only what a participant agrees to share.
